Summer Savvy: Protect your eyes this Summer

Summer in Bastrop County creates challenges for our eye health. Dry, hot, dusty air and bright sunshine can create dry, itchy, sensitive eyes. Here are some tips to maximize your vision and keep your eyes healthy this summer.

1.UV protection

The Texas summer sun is relentless and its high energy radiation damages the delicate tissues inside our eyes. Consistent UV exposure over a lifetime increases your risk of diseases like cataracts and macular degeneration. Invest in a pair of sunglasses with 100% UV protection. Choose a wraparound style to cover the thin, sensitive skin around your eyes. Consider adding a wide-brimmed hat to your outfit; it is additional protection for your eyes and skin.

2. Stay Hydrated

Hydration is key to maintaining good eye health, especially during the dry, hot  summer. Our eyes are designed to be moist; dryness can damage them and cause blurry vision. Make sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day to keep your eyes moist and prevent dryness and irritation. If your eyes feel dry or gritty, consider using preservative free artificial tears. Your eye doctor can recommend a brand that is safe and effective for you.

3. Take a Break from Screens

It’s hard to step away from screens when it’s over 100 degrees outside. But giving your eyes a break is imperative. Prolonged screen time can lead to dryness because we blink less often when we stare at a screen. Take regular breaks from phones, tablets, and computers. Follow the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break and look at something 20 feet away. Remember to blink!

Wherever possible, limit screen use for entertainment, especially for children. Encourage activities such as playing board games and reading physical books instead.

4. Work safely

About 50% of eye injuries happen at home. Yard work and home improvement projects create conditions where an eye injury can easily happen. Cleaning and cooking involve strong chemicals and heat, both of which can cause severe damage to eyes. Safety glasses can protect your eyes from projectiles, chemicals, and dirt. Don’t be an eye injury statistic!

6. Conquer allergies

Summer allergies often arise from dust or grass pollen. Symptoms of allergies include red eyes, itching, and irritation. Over-the-counter antihistamine eye drops often provide relief from allergy-related eye symptoms. Allergy eyelid wipes can also be beneficial as they help remove allergens from eyelashes and the skin around the eyes. If your symptoms persist, reach out to your eye doctor for personalized treatment.

7. Don’t swim with your contacts

Pool water is full of bacteria and strong chemicals. These can soak into your contact lenses and cause irritation or even infections. Remove your lenses before getting into the pool. Even better, wear prescription swim goggles to protect your eyes from the chlorine in pool water.

8. Quit smoking

Smoking irritates your eyes and causes dryness, it also increases your risk of eye diseases like cataracts and macular degeneration. In addition, smoking is linked to high blood pressure, a condition that impacts not only your overall health, but also the health of your eyes.

You may not notice any negative effects from smoking today. However, the damage caused by smoking will build up over many years and increase your risk of disease. Quit smoking today and your future self will thank you!

By following these simple tips, you can protect your eyes and enjoy a safe summer. Your vision is precious, so take the necessary steps to keep it healthy and sharp for years to come.
